How to get Gothic 1 from steam to work

For nostalgic reasons I recently bought Gothic 1 and 2 on steam. However I had some initial issues playing Gothic 1. I did the following to get it working:

  • Restart my PC after installation (The game would not even start before I did this).
  • Set the game to run in compatibility mode for windows XP.
  • Set zStartupWindowed=1 in the GOTHIC.INI file. Without this I had some very annoying borders. This makes the game run in Window mode, but it seems to run much better this way
